The Full Value Of The Beans
Last week I shared an article about innovation in upcycling coffee, and this week I’d like to continue that topic. Did you know the coffee industry wastes approximately 50% of the berries and beans in coffee production? Well, I’m happy to report leaders in the medical field have now developed a way to use some of that waste. One key finding was for the use of wound care, especially in patients who have difficulty healing. Of the various parts of the coffee – bean, husk, skin, and pulp – the pulp has the greatest benefits for healing wounds. Some other benefits include reducing inflammation and blood pressure and boosting brain energy. What does this mean? Not only can we reduce waste, but big picture, the use of the entire coffee bean will support the farmers who do backbreaking work. Two issues (environmental & economic), one bean, I’ll drink more coffee to that!
Take 5
Gets a Makeover
If you could make the perfect candy bar, what would it include? If you’re thinking chocolate, caramel, peanuts, pretzels, and peanut butter, you’re in luck – this bar exists! Yep, it’s known as Take5, and has been around since 2004. But although Take5 is a candy lover’s dream and just topped the LA Times’ candy bar power rankings, only 3% of US households actually bought it last year. So why aren’t more people buying this bar? Hershey decided it was because of the green and black label – it didn’t stand out and it didn’t resonate with people. So they are moving an iconic ingredient to the front (Reese’s), changing it’s color (to orange), keeping the same ingredients, and stepping out into the bar market once again. Let’s Take5 to enjoy!
